Abstract: This article offers fresh insights into the utilisation of mosque funds for the betterment of the ummah (community of believers) from the perspective of Maqasid al-Shari’ah (the objectives of Islamic law). Traditionally, mosque funds are primarily used for enhancing the facilities within the mosque. However, refocusing of the mosque funds for betterment of ummah initiative holds the potential for three key impacts: Firstly, it serves as a platform for social development, fostering the growth and development of human resources within the mosque community. Secondly, it functions as a community development programme, advocating for a comprehensive management approach to mosque funds through organised mediums or organisations. Thirdly, it contributes to local economic development by catalysing community welfare through the establishment of public facilities such as hospitals, schools, and minimarkets, thus enhancing the overall welfare of the ummah. Grounded in the perspective of Maqasid al-Shari’ah, this article underscores the opportunity to leverage mosque funds for the broader benefit (maslahah) of the society. The underlying basis for this is the principle that every regulation ordained by God aims to promote the well-being of humanity. Therefore, effective management and allocation of mosque funds towards ummah maslahah (welfare of the community of believers) can significantly contribute to the realisation of human welfare.
