THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AND THE ARAB LEAGUE: A CASE STUDY ON THE SYRIAN ARAB REPUBLIC
Rawa G. Almakky

ABSTRACT
The study provides an overarching and practice-oriented analysis of the League of Arab States as an ineffectual medium for the promotion and protection of human rights in the region. It will focus on the Syrian Arab Republic because not only is it long-standing member of the Arab League, but also because it is facing a major humanitarian crisis. The study will start by providing a historical overview of the constitutional and political system in Syria. It will then endeavour to examine the human rights situation in Syria and the government's treaty adherence. It will then critically examine if the Arab League has had an effective role in response to the Syrian uprising, the government led civil and the plight of the Syrian refugees. Overall, it would appear despite all atrocities committed by the Syrian regime, the internal divisions within the Arab League hindered its ability to prevent the Syrian humanitarian crisis from continuing.

Key Words: The League of Arab States, Human Rights, the Syrian Arab Republic, Arab Charter on Human Rights, Constitution.
