Annual Review of ICSID Cases, 2020

1. INTRODUCTION

Like every other aspect of life this year, COVID-19 raised unprecedented challenges for conducting proceedings before ICSID tribunals. The restrictions on travel and assembly adversely impacted administration of physical hearings at ICSID. However, despite the constraints, the number of hearings and consequently the number of awards rendered through ICSID have continued to increase. FY2020 witnessed the second-highest number of cases administered by ICSID.1 This increase in sessions and hearings, leading to the conclusion of record 68 proceedings,2 can be attributed to the efforts made by ICSID to adapt itself to the challenges posed by the pandemic and the substantial reduction in time and cost due to virtual proceedings.
