THE NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY—OBLIGATIONS AND RIGHTS OF STATES PARTIES: BALANCING THE PILLARS OF NON-PROLIFERATION, PEACEFUL USE, AND DISARMAMENT
Fanni Bunevacz
Abstract
This article critically examines how different sets of state parties, namely the Nuclear Weapon States and Non-Nuclear Weapon States interpret the most comprehensive arms control agreement from the Post-Cold War era until the present year. It focuses particularly on the three principled pillars: the non-proliferation, disarmament and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. It also examines how Nuclear Weapon States misinterpret the Treaty in favour of the principle of non-proliferation. This creates an inherent imbalance between the three pillars.
