I. INTRODUCTION
The Ash?ar? - Mu?tazil?’s, i.e., the classical textualist - rationalist debate, led the author to delve into the Islamic intellectual tradition via questions on epistemology, the nature of divine speech, human autonomy’s role in a theocentric view of ethics, and the construction of normative judgments. The author attempts to raze scholars’ longstanding opinion on the Ash?ar? approach and suggests that Ash?ar? scepticism against the human ability to formulate universal judgments independently of revelation is theoretically promising.
