JISPIL Vol 4 Issue 1 2008 - A3

Ever since 911, Pakistan has been in the eye of a storm. It is being labeled as the problem rather than as a part of the solution. It is accused of causing all the insecurity in Afghanistan and for the entire west. How did we come to this?

The reality is that Pakistan supported the western war against Communism since the 50s by contributing to the SEATO and CENTO Pacts effort. Its major contribution came when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan where it played the bulwark role against the Soviet occupation and thus helped the west in tying down the biggest military in the world. In brief it was instrumental in creating a Vietnam for the Soviet Communists in Afghanistan. Regrettably, for its involvement in this mammoth effort the Pakistani society had to pay a heavy price.
