Abstract: Given the importance of public health protection and the primary obligation of maintaining an international trading environment free from protectionism, WTO Members including the developing countries among them, have an obligation to fulfil the rules guiding the application of domestic sanitary and phytosanitary measures. This paper undertakes an in-depth empirical study of the benefits and challenges under the WTO SPS Agreement in the light of the development dimension of the current Doha Round
