EXPLORING NEW DIRECTIONS IN THE ISLAMIC LEGAL TRADITIONS: RE-INTERPRETING SHARI’A FROM WITHIN?
Shaheen Sardar Ali

Introduction:
It is an honour and privilege to present the keynote address at this important conference and I would like to thank the organisers and Brunel Law School for giving me this opportunity. The thoughts I would like to share with you today are experiential as well as being informed by my training as a student of Islamic law, as a Muslim, born and raised in Pakistan, a predominantly Muslim jurisdiction. But life experiences and scholarship are like flowing streams, fluid, moving and evolving, pushing the boundaries of existing knowledge by re-visiting old and exploring new discourses and debates. The main aim of this conversation is to reflect upon some methodologies and approaches in exploring new directions within the Islamic legal traditions to address contemporary challenges to Islamic law.
