JILIL Vol 13 Issue 1 2017 - Article 2
Jizya and Religious Tolerance in Islam
Md Jahid Hossain Bhuiyan

Abstract:
Religious tolerance in Islam is a controversial issue. This article will examine whether Islam is tolerant to non-Muslims (dhimma) and grants them the right to freedom of religion. Dhimmis are required to pay jizya to Islamic rulers. This article explores whether or not Islam supports the humiliation of dhimmis and denies them full citizenship status. I argue that Islam is tolerant to other religions and it does not support the humiliation of dhimmis and it grants full citizenship to non-Muslims and it also grants them religious freedom.
