Racial Tolerance from the Lens of Shari’ah Objectives

Abstract: This study examines the concept of racial tolerance from the perspective of Islamic law, situating it within the broader framework of the Shari’ah objectives (maqāṣid al-Shari’ah). Drawing on a descriptive and textual analysis approach, the study traces the foundations of the concept of racial tolerance in the primary sources of the Shari’ah, demonstrating its significance as an inherent principle within Islamic tradition that fosters equality, justice, and peaceful coexistence across diverse societies. The study’s findings show that the recognition of human diversity is an integral principle within the ethical framework of Islam. A paradigmatic practical example is evident in the Constitution of Medina, which demonstrates how Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fostered an inclusive Muslim society embracing ethnic plurality and doctrinal diversity. Moreover, the Prophet treated the Magians on an equal footing, articulating the practical applications of the principles of peaceful coexistence, tolerance and mutual acceptance. He granted them similar rights to those of the People of the Book, particularly the preservation of their lives, property, and dignity.
